Ruth H. Sharples, 94, passed away on December 27, 2017, in Albemarle, NC. She was born in Thomasville, Georgia, to Roy and Kate Horton. She married Russell "Curly" Sharples in 1943, and they had four children.
Ruth was a lifelong member of the Girl Scouts of Coastal Carolina. She served as the Ranger of Camp Pretty Pond in Brunswick County, NC, from 1972 until her retirement in 1992. She moved to Stanly County that year, and became involved with the Stanly County Three Rivers Quilt Guild. Her prize-winning quilts were completely handmade, and were true works of art.
Ruth grew up on a farm, and loved nature. She much preferred to be outdoors, and loved working in the Camp or her yard, where she was always surrounded by her beloved animals. A family friend wrote, " All creatures, great and small, are grieving," when they learned of her death.
Ruth was predeceased by her parents, two brothers, husband Curly, and son Pete. She is survived by her three children: Jerry and wife Linda Sharples, of Savannah, Ga.; Russ and wife Susan Sharples, of Albemarle, NC; and Rubi and husband Jim Howard, of Wilmington, NC; five grandchildren: Kerrie, Stephanie, Tony, Emily and Amanda; seven great grandchildren; and a niece and nephew.
The family held a private service to celebrate Ruth's life. Those wishing to make donations in her memory may do so to the Stanly County Humane Society, or Hospice of Stanly and the Uwharrie.
