Roy L. Harwood of Candler, NC, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 14, 2017. He was 95 years old.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Irene Huffman Harwood, and a brother, Raymond Harwood. Also surviving are his children, Phillip Harwood and Lee Harwood Gosnell; grandchildren, Sarah Harwood Booth, Adam Harwood, Daniel Gosnell, Katelyn Gosnell Hodge, and Evin Harwood; and two great-grandchildren, Apollo Hodge and Allie Harwood.
He was preceded in death by a son, John Harwood.
Originally from Albemarle, NC, Roy earned the rank of Eagle Scout at 16 years of age and was a Scoutmaster for many years. He was a US Navy veteran, having served on the battleship USS Mississippi before and throughout World War II in both the North Atlantic and South Pacific. Following the war, he moved to Asheville where he owned and operated Harwood's Cabinet Shop. After graduating from Western Carolina University with a Master's Degree in Education, Mr. Harwood taught mathematics and woodworking at Hall Fletcher School and retired in 1987 as principal from the Asheville City Schools. Roy Harwood was a devoted member of Asheville Wesleyan Church since 1949 and was also an ordained minister.
The funeral will be held at Asheville Wesleyan Church, 100 Pennsylvania Avenue, on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. His family will receive friends at the church beginning one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at Pisgah View Memorial Park, Candler, NC.
