Nancy Isenhour's Story
Nancy Isenhour Gamewell, 92 years of age, of Badin, passed away Friday, March 10, 2017 at Stanly Manor in Albemarle.
Mrs. Gamewell was born February 9, 1925 in Stanly County to the late George Myron Isenhour, Sr and the late Mary H. Menius Isenhour. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edward Paul Gamewell, Jr., a daugther, Nancy Grey Carle of New London as well as her seven sisters and a brother.
Nancy was well known as the "Panther Girl" at High Point College because she was the first woman to play on a collegiate men's basketball team. She was the first woman to be inducted into the Stanly County Sports Hall of Fame in 1999. After graduation at High Point College, she continued her education and obtained a Masters Degree from UNC-Charlotte. Nancy was an English and Journalism teacher at Albemarle High School.
A graveside service will be on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Fairview Memorial Park, 1425 E. Main Street in Albemarle officiated by Rev. Beau Linker.
Survivors include her special friend and care giving angel, Judy Bartley; daughter, Mary Katherine Williams and husband Paul of Cary; sons, Edward Paul Gamewell III and wife Judy of Lafayette, LA; and Mark Fraser Gamewell and wife Lu of Faith; son-in-law, Kevin Carle of New London; four grandchildren, Hunter Gamewell and wife Susana of Tallahasee, FL, Ginger Gamewell Dykes and husband Jason of Lafayette, LA, Rachel Williams Faller and husband Chris of Apex, and Nancy Joanne Gamewell of Faith; and one great grandchild, Lily Rene Gamewell.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Badin United Methodist Church, 10 Hickory Street, Badin, NC 28009 or the Stanly Community Christian Ministry, Inc., PO Box 58, Albemarle, NC 28001.
