Maurice's Story

Maurice Thomas Drye, 84, of Oakboro passed away at 9:01 AM Sunday, December 24, 2017 in his home. His funeral service will be 2:00 PM Saturday, December 30, 2017 at Oakboro First Baptist Church with Dr. Terrell Watts and Rev. Jonathan Waits officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakboro Cemetery. Following the burial, the family will return to the church fellowship hall to receive friends.
Born April 24, 1933 in Stanly County, NC, he was the son of the late Baylus Andrew Drye and Ola Lee Tucker Drye. He was a graduate of Oakboro HS Class of 1951 and attended NC State University and Pfeiffer College. He retired as part owner of BMB Knitting Inc. of Oakboro and President and Owner of Colony Knits Inc. of Oakboro. Mr. Drye was also affiliated with Singer and Vanguard Supreme. He was the oldest living member of the Oakboro First Baptist Church where he was a former choir director and choir member. He was a charter member of the Oakboro Lions Club, a member and past Chief of the Oakboro City Fire Dept. and a member of the Oakboro Volunteer Fire Dept. since 1951. He was a member of the Uwharrie Antique Car Club, an avid collector of antique clocks and cars.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Sarah Paul Teeter Drye of the home, daughters Lisa Whitley and husband Keith of Oakboro, Elizabeth Fultz and husband Paul of Oakboro, and Johanna Martin and husband Stacey of Oakboro, 6 grandchildren Michael Whitley, Seth Whitley and wife Jennifer, Megan Mabry and husband Brandon, C. J. Whitley and wife Elizabeth, Elizabeth Eloise Maness, Thomas Maurice Maness, 5 step-grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a special family friend Dana A. Maness of Albemarle.
