Mary Jane Potter's Story
Mrs. Mary Jane Potter Taylor, 96, of Gastonia, passed away peacefully Thursday, February 8, 2018 at Courtland Terrace. She was born in Sykesville, NJ, a daughter of the late Zachary Taylor Potter, Jr., and Mary Bullock Byrd Potter.
Mary was a 1939 graduate of Pemberton High School in New Jersey and earned her RN degree from Methodist Hospital in Philadelphia after three years of study. In 1943, she entered active service in the US Army Nurse Corps as a 2nd Lt. and began her service at the Station Hospital, Drew Field, Florida, where she met her husband to be. They moved to Albemarle in 1956 where she worked at Stanly County Hospital. She then worked alongside her husband as Vice President of Carolina Floral Imports from 1965 until her death. Mary was a long time active member of First United Methodist Church of Gastonia. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Thomas "Tom" Hudson Taylor, Jr., by her brother, Harry Potter, and her sister Helen Potter Croshaw.
Mary is survived by her children and spouses, Tommy and Donna Taylor of Albemarle; Jim and Carol Taylor; Jane and Rob Sumner all of Gastonia; John and Susan Taylor of Bolivia, NC; Virginia and Mike Defeo and Oak Island, NC; ten grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Saturday, February 10, 2018, from 2:30pm to 3:30pm, at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia. A graveside service will be held at 4:00pm, at Evergreen, A Quiet Place with Rev. David Christy officiating.
