Knowles Chalmers Hathcock, 81 years of age, of Oakboro, passed away Monday, February 13, 2017 at Carolinas HealthCare System Union in Monroe.
Born October 26, 1935 in Stanly County, he was a son of the late Pearl Mae Greene and James Bunyan Hathcock. He graduated from Oakboro High School, class of 1955. A veteran, he served in the US Army with time in Korea. After honorable discharge from the Army, he was employed by and retired from Consolidated Freight, Charlotte, NC as a freight handler.
Left to cherish his memory is his sister, Blevyn Hathcock Wheeler, of Morris, NY; brother in law, JD Pickler, Randleman; a cousin, Ann Hathcock Overcash, Mint Hill; nieces, Rebecca Hathcock Simpson (Bob), Marshville, Lynn Pickler Edwards (Cliff), Oakboro, Cheryel Huneycutt Bray (Rick), Lewisville, Leisel Pickler Owen (Bob), Oakboro, Kate Wheeler-Lewis (Dave), and Diana Wheeler-Paddock (Steve), Madison, WI; nephews, John Hathcock (Susan), Alexandria, VA, Farrington Hathcock, Jr. (Teri), Oakboro, Leon Huneycutt (Donna), Stanfield, John Wheeler (Lisa), Hillsborough, New Jersey, and Robert Wheeler (Kelly), Powell, OH; nieces in law, Brenda Whitley Huneycutt, Locust, and Sheila Hathcock, Oakboro; and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Being an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed the four seasons of the year afforded to him living in the Piedmont of North Carolina. One could find him in his "bee house" caring for the honey from his bees or shelling pecans from his homeplace, Sunnyview. As much as he loved his home, he also had a thirst for travel, and his sister, Blevyn, along with other family members, appreciated the trips he made to visit them at their homes. Along with this, he enjoyed reading and talking with family, friends, and neighbors.
He was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church, a Brother of Masonic Lodge #703, Albemarle, and a member of the NC Bee Keepers Association.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Laura Morris, Marvene Hinson, and Cheryl Aldridge for their care given to Jean and Chal over the last several months and to the staff and nurses of Autumn Care, Marshville, NC.
The Hathcock family will receive family and friends at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 23, 2017, at Mineral Springs Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
