Juanita was born August 10, 1924 in Anson County, NC and was a daughter of the late Roy Brack Moore and the late Nellie Mae Dabbs Moore. She was a 1942 graduate of Wadesboro High School.
She was first married to Glyn Tarleton, who was killed in action during World War II. She would later marry, Robert D. "Bob" Atkinson who preceded her in death in 2009.
Juanita and Bob owned and operated Bob's Ceramics for 17 years and she would later work part time at Subway and Lacy's.
She was a craft enthusiast and always eager to learn a new craft. She took an upholstery course through the mail and covered many pieces of furniture. Her upholstery work was later written up in a craft magazine. She also took: cake decorating, computer classes and art classes. She made many wedding and birthday cakes and also painted enough flowers to give each of her family members.
Juanita became a member of First Baptist Church in 1949 and remained a devoted and active member until declining health. She served as both a Cub Scout and Girl Scout Leader, was the director of the GA's and crowned 11 girls in 1957. Due to her leadership of the Senior Girl Scouts, she was instrumental in organizing the first nurse's aide program at the hospital and a number of her girls went on to become nurses themselves. She was also responsible for decorating the church bulletin boards and providing flowers for the tables in the fellowship hall.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Edith Gaddy Atkinson of Albemarle; her grandchildren, Heather Sutoris of Concord, Gretchen (Jared) Theissens of Winston-Salem, Scott (Stephanie) Wheeler of Tampa, FL and Melissa (Darren) Preslar of Norwood and her great-grandchildren, Alexis Sutoris, Gavin Theissens, Skylyn Wheeler, Seaira Wheeler, Bodie Wheeler, Wyatt Preslar and a new baby boy Preslar who is due to arrive any day. It is true, when God takes a family member, He sends another.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Frances Tarleton Wheeler and her sister, Nelline Moore.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Decorating Committee, P.O. Box 423, Wadesboro, NC 28170.
