John Jackson Matthew, 92, of Norwood, passed away Sunday night, July 9, 2017 at Liberty Lane Hospice Center in Salisbury.
A graveside service will be held at 3:00PM, Thursday, July 13, 2017 at Lakeview Cemetery in Butler, TN. The family will receive friends from 6:00PM until 7:30PM, Wednesday evening, July 12, 2017 at Edwards Funeral Home in Norwood.
Mr. Matthew was born April 5, 1925 in Volga, West Virginia to the late Fred and Ethel George Matthew. He was a retiree of Republic Steel Corporation in Warren, Ohio and worked 10 years for the Stanly County Convenience Center. He proudly served his country in the US Army during WWII. He was part of the Battle of the Bulge 143rd Artillery. He was active in the Norwood VFW and American Legion.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Marie White Matthew; son, Larry R. Hicks and sister, Bonnie Matthew Cloud.
He is survived by his son, Douglas L. Hicks, Sr. of Norwood and daughter, Peggy Jo Hicks Long of Windham, OH; six grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
