John "Jack" Edward's Story
John "Jack" Edward Ferris, 88, of Southern Pines, NC passed away on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at Penick Village in Southern Pines.
A service will be held for family and friends at a later date.
Mr. Ferris was born on May 1, 1929 in Cleveland, Ohio to Irish immigrants, the late David Ferris and the late Jennie Ellison Ferris.
His entire childhood was spent in Cleveland where his father worked as a carpenter and his mother as a homemaker.
He is survived by an older sister Betty Griffin of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and his older brother David Ferris of Fort Myers, Florida. He is also survived by his two loving children, daughter Melissa Ferris of Williamsburg, Virginia, son Michael Ferris of Albemarle, North Carolina, and a very special grandson Evan and his daughter-in-law Marla, who were wonderful additions to his family later in life.
Jack graduated from Cleveland Heights High School and attended Ohio University. He later moved to Southern California and lived many years in Long Beach, CA where he married the late JoAnne Wallace Ferris. For the last 34 years Jack resided in the Southern Pines area. He not only enjoyed playing cribbage with his kids but also participating in a regular tennis group at the municipal tennis courts in Southern Pines. He had been an active participant in the Moore County Senior Games, winning medals in numerous activities. He enjoyed watching and attending a variety of sporting events, which was an activity he and Michael enjoyed together. He also took great pride in Melissa's numerous high school, college, and professional sporting accomplishments, as well as her very successful career as a college volleyball coach. He was a great "Poppa" as his kids called him and will be missed greatly by them.
Memorials may be made to Home of Hopes, 1816-B East Main Street, Albemarle, NC 28001, as serving the less fortunate and those in need was significant part of his life.
